Universal Yachting specialises in the coding of sailing yachts for yacht charter in the UK.
Any UK vessels in commercial use up to 24 meters in length are required by law to comply with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Small Commercial Vessel and Pilot Boat Code of Practice.
We use the Harmonised Code MGN 280 to code sailing vessels both skippered and bareboat under the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) authority.
There are various categories of operation which can be applied for which very much depend on your requirements, the nature & size of your vessel and distance from a safe haven.
Most modern production yachts around the 35 – 40 foot size code fit happily in to Category 2, this allows you to operate within 60 miles of a safe haven.
The level of equipment required to bring a yacht up to the code of practice varies but bear in mind that you may well already have much of the equipment onboard or another way, you should have it onboard anyway.
